Project Details
Grab food is a casual PC game, which was made using Unity, for the Singapore Heritage Game Jam. It was made by a team consisting of 4 people.
The theme
The theme for the game jam was: Renewal. This game jam was one of the first few game jams organized after the Covid pandemic, so our team wanted to make a game relating to these two points.
Our tEAM
The team was formed pretty quickly as my teammates and I were from the same school:
Lincoln - Programmer, Game Designer
Amber - 3D Modelling
Jacky - 2D Assets and Artwork
Myself - Programmer, UI Designer
Our IDEA
We choose GrabFood as our main direction as the riders are commonly found on the road or walkways hard at work delivering food for people and as covid restrictions ease up, these riders have to tackle higher traffic and denser crowds, which allowed us to gain a newfound respect for these hard-working hustlers!
Throughout this game, players have to complete the word as fast as possible and they would be "rated" based on their performance, hopefully, the players would show a new appreciation for grab riders who worked day and night to deliver food to our doorstep!

Gameplay loop
Just like a grab delivery driver, our game follows a day schedule, starting work at 12 in the afternoon, and ending the shift at 7 at night. Each hour, you will have a target number of orders to complete, and you will earn money for each order completed. However, you will lose money if you take too long for an order, or if you hit pedestrians while traveling on the road.
At the end of the day, you will get a summary of the orders completed, and the total amount of money earned on that day.
Movement
For the movement of the player, the screen would show a UI of a keyboard, and each time a user presses a letter on their keyboard, the player would move to the corresponding letter in the game.
The players however, were limited to moving horizontally and vertically, and they were not allowed to move diagonally or move to a letter that was not present in the same row or column the player was currently.

Notification System
To simulate an actual experience of a grab food delivery rider, we decided to implement a notification system, that was accompanied by ratings as well as reviews. After the player completes an order, they will get a notification on the top right corner of the screen, which will show the rating and the review the customer gave for that order.
Each rating and review is based on the time taken for the player to complete the order, as well as the number of pedestrians the player hit during the game. The longer time it takes for the player to complete the order, the lower the rating the player will get for that order. Similarly, the more pedestrians the player hits, the lower the rating and review the player will receive.

Awards
There were no prizes given for the game jam, as they wanted to make it fun for contestants to explore their ideas.
Our game was in the top ten for the most popular and played game.
